Chapter 19
Flora McMurtry looked up the neon sign for The Garden Motel. The neon in the d was faded away and flickering and it made the sign look like it read the Gar en Motel. She didn’t like that. She was a professional entrepreneur and appearances mattered to her. And it had been so damn long since she had had the sign put up that she sure as Shinola couldn’t remember who to call to get it fixed. Surely, somewhere in her office there should be some name or number to call. It would just take some doing to find it.
She stood outside of Room 1 in the night air looking up at it. In the distance beyond the cracked, black parking lot, the occasional car zoomed by. But no one was stopping. It was a slow night, dead as a doorknob. Or doornail. She couldn’t remember how that saying went. But it all meant the same tonight—she didn’t have a single paying customer. She wanted to let Harold go home. She was up anyway. But that wouldn’t be decent of her. He was a lazy P.I.T.A. but she believed in treating her employees right. That’s why she got screwed so often.
For another night, sleep was eluding her. It had been almost a week since she’d had that scare behind the motel, when she was certain something was stalking her. It was the same night as the murder out at the Exxon station, not too far from there. She thought about calling the police and telling them her story. But what kind of a story was it? She didn’t see anything, she barely heard anything. All she knew and all she could tell was that something had been milling around the back of the motel and it scared the absolute bejeezus out of her. That wasn’t enough to warrant a phone call. But she was certain, down-in-the-dirt certain, that something had been back there that night. Something had been watching her. She hadn’t been back there since, at least not in the nighttime. It was okay to go back there during the daylight. That was safer. But there was no way on God’s green earth she’d venture out there once the sun had set. She’d leave that responsibility to Harold. She supposed that was a big part of why she continued to let him work the night shift when it was so slow. But it did seem a waste since, here she was, wandering around at almost one in the morning.
She had to admit it to herself—she felt stupid standing outside at this time of night. But it was a nice night and the breeze was making her just a little bit drowsy. Besides, it wasn’t like there was much on the television this time of night. She wasn’t in the mood for infomercials.
It was unknown to her how much time passed as she stood there watching few cars zip by when, as if to set her heart aflutter, one pulled in.
